4:43 Damn that hit close. Too close.

hit close toはhit close to homeの略として訳しました。

This anime is so realistic when it comes to explaining human nature and that's why I like it because it's so real. I also like Kaiji as a character, a gambling addict who goes as far as risking his life not just once but over and over and yet strong because of his unwavering spirit, remaining the same regardless of his experiences but only growing wiser with each new experience. Kaiji, in a way, is admirable. By far this is my most favorite anime.

unwavering=動揺しない 断固とした
admirable=立派な 称賛に値する

I remember that the first time I heard that speech of "living meaningless lives" it made me kind of sad, because I realized that I'm one of those guys (not that I didn't knew that already tho) but the saddest part is that even though I feel bad about it I haven't changed, I'm still an unemployed and lazy 26 year old waste of meat maintained by his mother, who dropped college after 3 years and has not done anything useful with his life ever... But that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess.

That’s the way the cookie crumbles

“That’s the way the cookie crumbles.”

More like Tonezawa

The way he said "I'll kill you, you pieces of shit" always cracks me up. Tonegawa was legendary.

He did at 5:50 "This bridge may be a drastic remedy, but it can also be a good opportunity to wake them up". You have to be willing to put your life on the line to attain something great. I am not a big fan of Nietzsche but there was one quote that impacted me a lot "Men need play and danger. They are given work and safety.. danger unveils our spirit and forces us to be strong" If you want to understand your true self or bring it out you have to experience danger and live by necessity.

put one's life on the line=命を懸ける
attain=達成する 実現する

“Men need play & danger. Civilization gives them work and safety.”

― Friedrich Nietzsche

(The true man wants two things: danger and play. For that reason he wants woman, as the most dangerous plaything)ばっかがヒットして、最初、翻訳に困りました(笑)。

Civilization =文明 現代社会

The show is not pessimistic, get it through your heads! It is realistic! One of the things it shows, is that doing nothing results in nothing.

get it through one's head=○○ということを人(one's head)に理解させる

All that stuff about the bloodbath being an opportunity to awaken their lazy lifes and Kaiji returns to his previous sins at the beginning of season 2. It shows that even on this conditions a person can still remain their old, weak self. Personally I think it's because Tonegawa's theory doesn't take into consideration any kind of moral code (or religion, or something) to put into practice afterwards, it's not only being serious at life that is the problem, it's also for that life to make sense in a meaningful way. At least Kaiji finally succeeds later, so maybe that's something.

take into consideration=~を考慮に入れる
moral code=道徳律
put into practice=実践する
in a meaningful way=有意義な方法で

Like the naked man says to Kaiji: "Human sentiments are transient, decisions will always be made for personal gains" This show/manga is extremely pessimistic but truthful to the T.

To be honest I don't like his 'lessons' because they have incredibly big capitalist feel to them and in my honest opinion, some of his lessons about money shouldn't be taken heed of, unless you wish to be a slave of money.

"Whether they want it or not, people use up most of their lives for money."

Such an interesting character

The thing is, I believe the way for people to improve is different. You can't give people the same advice because people are different. He's just saying the obvious about people; he's saying things these type of people don't see for themselves. In a sense, by telling everyone their faults and their own negativity he's helping them out. Sometimes people never see their own faults till there in a life and death situation.

see for oneself=自分の目で確かめる
